I Hear Dallas and LA Calling

It looks like I may be off next week on another business trip, this time to Dallas and again to Los Angeles. As such, I’m a little behind on planned blogging topics, most notably the heavy piece I alluded to last week. The good news is I’ve sketched it out and I have time set aside over the weekend to get it wrapped up. Until then, here are a few other developments and items of interest worth pointing out…

There’s a “bloody brilliant” video available courtesy of Save The Arts, a UK based outfit, that does a perfect job at defining why the arts are important and shouldn’t be the victim of shortsightedness. Watch it then sign the petition (you don’t have to be a UK citizen)!

Venture Platform News

There is a new Venture Platform demo portfolio available that shows the included 10 designer color themes as well as some examples of the homepage layout configuration options. Additional portfolio demos showing season event indexes, event details pages, interior pages and typography, Creative Control Engine, and the Venture Event Manager are all on their way.

"I hear that every time you show up to work with an orchestra, people get fired." Those were the first words out of an executive's mouth after her board chair introduced us. That executive is now a dear colleague and friend but the day that consulting contract began with her orchestra, she was convinced I was a hatchet-man brought in by the board to clean house.

I understand where the trepidation comes from as a great deal of my consulting and technology provider work for arts organizations involves due diligence, separating fact from fiction, interpreting spin, as well as performance review and oversight. So yes, sometimes that work results in one or two individuals "aggressively embracing career change" but far more often than not, it reinforces and clarifies exactly what works and why.

In short, it doesn't matter if you know where all the bodies are buried if you can't keep your own clients out of the ground, and I'm fortunate enough to say that for more than 15 years, I've done exactly that for groups of all budget size from Qatar to Kathmandu.

For fun, I write a daily blog about the orchestra business, provide a platform for arts insiders to speak their mind, keep track of what people in this business get paid, help write a satirical cartoon about orchestra life, hack the arts, and love a good coffee drink.

  1. Hmm, I donʻt know. That video seems to reinforce the stereotype about Scots and their livestock.

    But really, I love it and have watched it multiple times this week. Acknowledges the need for both crucial services and the arts. And it keeps you paying attention so you can catch all the little asides.
