Operations Manager

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

Position: Operations Manager
Status: Salaried, exempt
Department: Artistic Operations
Reports to: Director of Operations and Facilities

Provides assistance to the Artistic Operations department with day-to-day operational and facilities support and coordination of production needs for all events at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall (JMSH), as well as BSO concerts and presentations at the Music Center at Strathmore (Strathmore) and other venues.


  • Generate and distribute production sheets for operations staff and stage crew at JMSH and Strathmore for all BSO orchestra concerts and presentations
  • Assist with development of annual operations budget
  • Along with Director of Operations and Facilities, work closely with local vendors and visiting production managers to ensure that production requirements are fulfilled for all events
  • Generate piano tuning schedules for all events at JMSH and for BSO concerts and presentations at Strathmore
  • Manage backline and other instrument rentals for classical concerts, pops concerts, and rental events as required
  • Maintain the Master Planning Calendar as it relates to orchestra services.
  • Monitor and schedule maintenance and repair of all BSO-owned instruments
  • Research and obtain props or other related items as required for concert productions
  • Schedule bus transportation for all run-out performances to Strathmore and other venues for the orchestra
  • Act as production assistant for any shows requiring Production Stage Managers
  • Oversee logistics for summer concert series at Oregon Ridge
  • Assist education department with logistics for the Academy program
  • Assist with tour logistics


  • Participate in weekly departmental and production meetings
  • Provide rehearsal coverage
  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Operations and Facilities


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of one (1) year increasingly responsible administrative experience, preferably in music or arts related field
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs, and ability to learn other software programs as needed
  • Ability to adjust schedule as needed for support at functions, which frequently occur on evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, and to handle calmly and efficiently situations ranging from routine to emergency
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to handle multiple interruptions and adjustments to priorities throughout the day.
  • Excellent critical thinking, strategic planning, and problem solving skills
  • Must have or be able to quickly acquire knowledge of departmental program structure (mission, goals and objectives), department policies and procedures
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
