Job Description

Duties and responsibilities:

In summary, working in partnership with Grammy-award winning maestro Lucas Richman and in accordance with the directives of and the policies established by the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will have responsibility for day-to-day management duties for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra as well as oversight of the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras. Further responsibilities include input, in conjunction with the Board of Directors and Music Director, into strategic direction and vision, as well as a leadership role in audience development, strengthening Orchestra visibility and brand, community engagement, and educational programming. With a limited but highly capable part time staff and engaged Board, the position requires flexibility, high energy, and a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently.

Compensation:

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, aligned with expectations and budget for an orchestra of this size.

Organization/orchestradescription:

The Bangor Symphony Orchestra (BSO) was founded in and has operated continuously since 1896, making it one of the oldest orchestras in the U.S. The BSO annually presents classical, pops and youth concerts, the Nutcracker, educational outreach and master class programs, as well as the Maine High School Concerto Competition. The BSO was a 2007 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts award for Artistic Excellence and in 2011 was recognized as the Nonprofit of the Year by the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce.

In 2010, Lucas Richman was appointed the 10th Music Director and Conductor of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, also serving as Music Director for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra since 2003.

Bangor Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is governed by a 17-member Board of Directors, including 1 musician representative. The annual operating budget is just over $500k.
