Job Description

The Illinois Symphony Orchestra’s Personnel & Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring that the scheduling and production of all orchestra events (concerts, rehearsals, education and outreach programs, tours, run-outs, special events and ensemble performances) run smoothly, effectively, and in a financially responsible manner and is responsible for audition coordination, contracting, communications, and payroll preparation for all orchestra activities. S/he serves as the primary contact with musicians and provides direct communications with administrative and artistic management regarding musician issues and needs.  S/he works closely with the Stage Manager to ensure proper stage setup, facility suitability, and special needs for individual concerts.  S/he maintains meticulous and accurate files on each musician and policy, and records notes from all business meetings between musicians and music director and/or executive director.  The Orchestra Personnel & Operations Manager also functions as a liaison between the orchestra musicians and the rest of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra.

Under the leadership of Grammy nominated Music Director Alastair Willis, The Illinois Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra is central Illinois’ largest professional orchestra serving over 35,000 patrons in the communities of Bloomington-Normal, Springfield and the surrounding region with symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, Concerts for Kids and outdoor Labor Day concert series in each community. In addition to concert performances, the Orchestra’s music education and outreach programs serve elementary schools through the Step-By-Step education program and reach middle schools, high schools, universities, community organizations and senior centers through guest artist residencies and ensemble performances. The Illinois Symphony Orchestra has a budget of approximately $1 million.

 

Requirements:

Bachelors’ degree preferably in music, music management and/or education or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required. Experience in orchestra personnel management and operations and knowledge of classical music is highly desirable. Highly motivated and positive individual that can work in a team environment with excellent written and oral communication skills with meticulous attention to detail is required. The successful candidate is expected to attend all rehearsals, performances, and auditions with evening and weekend hours being mandatory.
